A to Z Challenge: Y is for Your WHY

create heartWHY do we do what we do? What is it that drives us to write, or draw, or dance, or cook? When you decide to make a living off of something that brings you joy, you’re inevitably going to have moments of frustration and doubt, where you forget what made you even want to do this crazy thing in the first place.

Those moments are when you need to reconnect to your WHY, to the reason you love doing the thing, so you can keep going when the going gets tough. Have methods in place to help you reconnect. Re-read things you wrote in the past, or look at good reviews or comments. Take a break to do something fun and silly. Whatever works (and is healthy), do it!

Pay attention to your feelings when you’re in the midst of creative projects. If you feel disconnected, take a step back. Don’t dwell on why you feel disconnected; instead, focus on how to reconnect. For that, you’ll need your WHY.

What’s your WHY? Why do you do what you do? For me, it’s all about communication and connection. How about you?

  1. I think you’ve nailed it with communication and connection. And also the creative outlet. I’m kind of an introvert, but I’m drawn to intelligent people. To me, the sexiest man is the one who can hold up his end of a conversation. I write for the people who might share my vision–the connection thing. I write and play music because I want to share beauty–that’s part of the communication motive (and so is sharing the vision) and also the creativity thing. God made us in His image, and He is by definition the Creator; it makes sense we feel compelled to create.
